Description:

 CN is seeking Carmen or Carmen Apprentices.

Carmen build, rebuild, repair and inspect railway cars and trailers. They follow federal and company regulations. In addition, they are responsible for using hand tools, power tools, or welding equipment including cutting torches and measuring instruments.

Carmen inspect cars and components in accordance with AAR and FRA regulations and company operating standards as well as perform maintenance activity both scheduled and on-request.

Responsibilities also include:

  • Preparation of forms using computers when necessary and operating transport vehicles including cranes, locomotives, and shop equipment.
  • Performance of other essential and nonessential functions is required.
  • A carman should possess good eye-hand coordination.
  • Work frequently requires lifting weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds.
  • Work is physically demanding, generally outdoors in extreme weather conditions with regular exposure to dust, pollen, fumes, noise and vibrations.
  • Schedule involves working days, afternoons, nights, weekends & Holidays, sometimes away from home.
     
    Requirements
  • A valid drivers license and High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position.
  • Completion of 4-year apprenticeship is required to become a Journeyman Car Mechanic.
  • This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.
