Pipefitter

A Pipefitter lays out, assembles, fabricates, maintains and repairs piping systems.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints and specifications to determine the type of pipe and tools to use, and lay out and plan the sequence of tasks
  • Cut openings for pipe in walls, floors and ceilings using hand or power tools or machines.
  • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe to required shape using hand and power tools
  • Weld, braze, cement, solder and thread joints to join sections of piping system
  • Install supports, valves, piping and control systems.
  • Use testing equipment to check for leaks.
  • Clean and maintain pipe units and replace worn components.

Education & Employment Requirements:

  • Secondary school diploma is a typical prerequisite.
  • Completion of a four to five year long apprenticeship program or over five years of work experience in the trade along with some high school, college or industry courses in pipefitting.
